Subject: Imprecise forecast
Dear Mr. Alvarez,
I would like to ask, why did the JTWC give a name "super" and category classification "5" to typhoon "Longwang", when its maximum sustained winds are 130knots and gusts up to 160knots? The category "5" classification recommends 135knots of max. sust. winds.

Its not a "niggling" e-mail, I just want to attract attention on this problem, your forecast center has got a high level responsibility.
If this problem is not Your competence, than please forward it to the authorised person.
Thank you for all Your trouble,

Mr. Jenei,
Thank you for your keen observation, however, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center does not utilize the Saffir-Simpson scale in classifying tropical systems. Nowhere do we refer to this storm as a Category 5 system. The use of Super Typhoon is in line with our higher-level guidance document (USCINCPAC INSTRUCTION 3140.1X) which defines Super Typhoon as follows:
Super Typhoon/Hurricane: Warm core tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustained surface wind (one-minute mean) is 130 knots or greater.
I hope this clarifies any confusion.
Thanks for you time and attention.
Sincerely,
LCDR R. Mohammed
Operations Officer, JTWC
